With a lot of us spending quite a bit more time at home lately, there's little doubt you and your kids are feeling a little stir crazy. Help your kids stave off cabin fever and boredom with some of these fun (and free!) activities.

- Make a scavenger hunt. This might sound like a lot of work, but there are dozens of pre-made hunts available online. After a quick set up, you can get out of the way and watch the kids figure things out on their own.

- Fort building. Forfeit the couch and spare blankets for an afternoon. Outside-the-box play encourages creative thinking.

- Bury (or stash away) a time capsule. It will give your kid an opportunity to reflect on a historic moment, but also serves as a useful reminder that this will one day be a distant memory.

- Make a volcano science experiment with common household items. Just make sure to step outside for this one.

- Make a squadron of paper airplanes. There are countless varieties to make, and maybe they'll learn a little about physics in the process.

- Get your garden started. Spring has sprung! Kids of all ages can help turn a garden over and help plant a few seeds or bulbs. A little sunshine never hurt either.

- Turn the kids loose in the kitchen. Some supervision required, but teaching your kids some simple and quick recipes can show them the importance of following directions and may even engender some self-sufficiency.

- Handwrite letters for friends and loved ones who are currently out of reach. This is another great way to get your kids to reflect on the current moment, and who doesn't love getting a letter in the mail?

- Have a karaoke night - no machine necessary. Thousands of songs can be found on YouTube for free.

- Chalk the Walk. People in cities across the U.S. have taken to the sidewalks, chalking up designs and messages of encouragement for their neighbors.

- Countless zoos, museums and national parks now have interactive virtual tours.

- When all else fails, there's always cardboard.

I hope you and your family are happy and healthy together at home during this time.
