Every year we gather of celebrate the unofficial end of summer during the Labor Day weekend and commemorate the achievements of the American Labor movement.

How did it all get started? Here are a few fun facts about the history of Labor Day.

- Two men are credited with playing an important role in establishing the Labor Day holiday - Matthew Maguire, a machinist from Paterson, New Jersey, and Peter J. McGuire, a New York City Carpenter.

- The first Labor Day parade was held in September 1882 in New York City.

- Oregon was the first state to recognize Labor Day as a legal holiday.

- President Grover Cleveland signed a bill making Labor Day a national holiday in 1894.
